In this extremely cold high-altitude environment, degraded systems are at great risk to a future of harmful land uses and climate change.
Locally, the growing season is of undetermined duration, often involving frost and snow into June; ranch land management is equally
challenged in the harsh environment. Those who rely on the land for their livelihood are smart and extremely experienced and committed.
Working to promote and empower the use of holistically regenerative agricultural techniques in collaboration with local ranchers, farmers,
and other holistic land management experts, Coldharbour Institute (CI) is working to help achieve Basin-wide successes that can be applied
in other high-altitude, cold-weather regions of the world.
The Coldharbour Ranch site demonstrates, educates, and encourages the use of sustainable agriculture techniques including animal husbandry, regenerative grazing, farming, and growing structure. Concurrent onsite activities include CI and partner organizations’ efforts in agriculture
research and creation of a collaborative food production, marketing, and distribution program to enhance both local food security and
provide economic benefit to individuals and the community by taking advantage of diversified markets and techniques.
